Here are some frequently asked questions that should provide you with all the information you need to get started on your yoga journey. If we’ve missed anything, please let us know.
Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind and spirit.
Many people think yoga is just stretching. While stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures (asanas), each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in sequence, creating heat in the body through movement (vinyasa-style yoga) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect alignment. While the poses themselves remain the same, the approach may vary depending on the tradition in which the teacher has been trained.
The continued practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and well-being by making the body strong and flexible and improving respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal system functioning.
Vinyasa means breath-synchronized movement. The breath is the heart of this discipline and links asana to asana in a precise order. By synchronizing movement with breathing an intense internal heat is produced. This heat purifies muscles and organs, expelling unwanted toxins as well as releasing beneficial hormones and minerals, which can nourish the body when the sweat is massaged back into the skin. Vinyasa greatly improves blood circulation.
Hot yoga is simply any form of yoga practiced in a heated room. During hot classes, the studio is heated up to 103°F, with humidity levels between 30-40%.
Many individuals find their first few classes to be the most challenging. Often this is because it’s new and unfamiliar. You will find that you will learn the postures quickly and become familiar with what to expect next. Come to class with no expectations - just a light heart, open mind and a well hydrated body. Most students feel amazingly detoxified and relaxed after their first class.
However, as with any form of exercise, different conditions and situations require a period of acclimatization. The benefits of yoga are immediate and as the practice becomes more familiar, you’ll forget all about your initial concerns and begin to focus on your yoga practice. Many of us even come to crave yoga, increasing our practice from once or twice a week to everyday, feeling a void when we don’t practice regularly.
Yoga really is magic!
Any amount of practice is beneficial, however, if possible, you should come to class a minimum of 3 to 4 times per week for maximum benefits. It’s especially beneficial to practice hot yoga as much as you can as a beginner. This will help your muscles develop muscle memory through patterning your body as you move through each asana. Each time you practice, muscles are built and conditioned while properly aligning your skeletal structure.
It does not take long to see the result of hot yoga. Depending on the frequency of your practice, results occur in as little as 2 weeks, with a regular practice of 4 classes per week. Remember everybody is different and unique, as are the results.
It’s important to understand that yoga is not about flexibility. This misconception keeps many people from coming to yoga class. Yoga is about stretching your spine and body in all directions. From the very first class, you will learn the ways your body moves, enabling you to receive the benefits of each pose according to your own ability.
Most people are inflexible or become inflexible over time. Muscles and joints stiffen from underuse, which often occurs as we age. Many jobs require long hours of sitting or bending. This can compress and disfigure the spine while causing muscles to conform to this incorrect alignment. Yoga helps to alleviate stiffness and creates flexibility, keeping the spine limber and in proper alignment. If you are not flexible, that’s even more reason to start practicing.
If you have any health concerns or injuries, or if you are pregnant, we recommend consulting your doctor prior to attending any yoga classes. Please also inform the instructor prior to class.
All that being said, many health conditions have been improved through regular yoga practice. In fact, some doctors now prescribe yoga as a form of physical therapy. Remember yoga heals and strengthens the body and its systems, and is especially beneficial to the immune system.

Classes are open to everyone at a drop-in rate of $17. Memberships and class passes are also available for purchase. We also offer classes that are designated as Karma classes, whereby a donation is requested as a form of payment. Although it is not necessary to reserve classes in advance, (with the exception of pre-registered classes/workshops) you may choose to do so through our online scheduling system.

Comfortable clothes that allow you to move and stretch easily. Stay away from anything too baggy, as you will probably find yourself upside down at some point! Shoes and socks are not worn in class.
Yes. Yoga students of all ages are encouraged to attend classes at Spraoi. Students under the age of 18 must have a signed parent/guardian release waiver on file prior to taking any class. Once the waiver is signed, it will be kept on file for all future visits.

We are proud to offer non-heated classes that are accessible to everyone. We will be offering classes for children 5 years of age and over but have yet to finalize the schedule. We do not permit anyone under 14 years of age to attend heated classes at Spraoi. At this age, sweat glands have not fully matured and the body is not able to sweat to cool the body down during heated classes. Teenagers 14-17 years of age may attend heated classes provided their waiver form is signed by a legal guardian.

Classes are held on a regular basis every month. They may be taken on a drop-in basis and are included in all memberships. Advance registration is not required although you may register for classes through our online scheduling system. Workshops are scheduled at set times during set days and are not included in memberships (students with 6-month and 12-month unlimited memberships receive 10% off). Advance registration is always required for workshops. Workshops generally focus on more specific themes.
We strongly encourage you to register for classes to guarantee a spot. Registration can be completed through our online scheduling system.
Workshops are held at set times on set dates and must be reserved and paid for in advance. Workshops are normally scheduled for a 4 to 6-week period. Enrollment in a workshop is for an entire session, however if there is space and depending on the format of the workshop, we will allow for drop-ins at the drop-in rate. You may register for workshops through our online scheduling system.
To avoid being charged the full rate:
· class reservations may be cancelled up to 60 mins before the beginning of a class.
All workshops are non-refundable and a credit will not be issued for missed classes. A minimum number of registrants is required to run these workshops. If the workshop is cancelled due to lack of registration, a full refund will be provided.
· private and semi-private sessions must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance.
Private and semi-private sessions may be scheduled upon request. To request a private or semi-private session, please contact the studio.
If you are not ready to commit to a 6-month or 12-month unlimited yoga membership, please stop in or call to speak with one of our teachers about options that would suit you best. If you are new to the practice of yoga, we recommend the beginner series. The beginner series will be scheduled for a period of 6-weeks with the first series beginning on Monday, January 9 at 8p.
Regular scheduled classes may also be taken on a drop-in basis.
A class package will allow you to attend a fixed number of classes within a specific time-frame. Unlimited monthly memberships allow you to take as many classes as desired within a specified time-frame. For those planning to take 1 or more classes per week, the monthly unlimited membership is recommended.
12 and 6-month memberships (paid monthly or in full) may request to freeze their membership. 12-month Memberships may be frozen for a period of one, two or three months and may be frozen for a maximum of three months per year of membership. 6-month Memberships may be frozen for a period of one or two months to a maximum of two months per year of membership.
A minimum of 15 days advance notice must be given by sending an email to email@example.com identifying the length of the suspension.
All cancellation requests must be submitted within 30 days in advance.
Cancellation can only be granted if a member moves away or for medical reasons. A minimum of one month advance notice must be given by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Cancellations cannot be backdated. Memberships cannot be placed on hold once a Cancellation notice has been given. Supporting documents (proof of new permanent residence or doctor's note) is required and must be submitted to complete a cancellation. Should the cancellation be approved, members are welcome to continue practicing for one month from the date of notice. Time added to the end of a membership as a result of placing a membership on hold is not eligible for cancellation.
